Personnel Neutron Monitoring Around High Energy Accelerators

Personnel neutron monitoring around high energy proton accelerators can take advantage of the fact that energetic components usually present in the stray field allow the use of detectors with relatively high energy thresholds. In a series of experiments the response of various etched track detectors in radiation fields outside the main shield of the CERN proton accelerators was compared. Because of the extended energy range that has to be covered, none of the presently available detectors can be considered as a personnel dosemeter. In most practical cases, however, the dosimetry aspect is of less importance since dose rates in accessible areas are kept low. Under such favourable conditions the radiation monitoring features of the investigated detectors become important.
