SENTINEL Project special initiative: ethical and justification issues in medical radiation protection

The EC SENTINEL Project was undertaken with a view to looking at the ‘Safety and Efficacy for New Techniques and Imaging using New Equipment to support European Legislation’. Many aspects of conventional and digital radiology, including fluoroscopy, new detectors and interventional procedures in both radiology and cardiology were examined during the project. However, in trying to cope with radiation safety issues over such a wide range, differences in approach became evident. These lead to a questioning of the soundness of some of the approaches commonly accepted within the radiation protection community.
