In as vibrant and rapidly changing profession as accelerator health physics, it is vital to avoid obsolescence by formal continuing education. In the mid-sixties, the USAEC recognised this need and supported five courses given at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory during the period 1967–71 in which many of the early accelerator health physicists (AHPs) in the US were trained. With the termination of the Berkeley courses, there was a 20-year-long void during which cutting-edge information required for accelerator radiation safety had to be gleaned largely from what crumbs might fall from the tables of national and international particle accelerator conferences that served much broader appetites.
The void was eventually filled by the singular efforts of Don Cossairt who, in 1993, added lectures on what was entitled (perhaps, considering the audience, more acceptably?) Radiation Physics to the menu of topics offered by US Particle Accelerator School (USPAS). He has continued to give
