Radium and Radon in Danish Drinking Water
Samples of raw and treated water from bored wells have been collected from all parts of Denmark and analysed for radium-226 and radon-222 content. Measurements of samples from the island Bornholm in the Baltic Sea have shown concentrations of radon-222 up to 1070 Bq.l-1 and concentrations of radium-226 up to 550 mBq.l-1. This corresponds to annual effective dose equivalents of up to 0.5 mSv from inhalation of radon-222 daughters and of 0.06 mSv from ingestion of radium-226. The doses from tap water outside Bornholm are estimated to be less than 5 µSv per year.
