Natural Radioactivity of Raw Materials and Products in the Cement Industry
The natural radioactivity of the raw materials and products of the cement industry in Hungary has been determined. The average specific concentrations (all from 25 samples) of 232Th, 226Ra and 40K varied within the following intervals: 0.6-199, 0.6-228 and 7-709 Bq.kg-1, respectively. On the basis of the hazard index and the radium equivalent concentration it can be shown that the natural radioactivity of cement samples is not greater than the values permitted in the established standards in other countries. In the case of the higher radioactivity of some cement samples the high activity of the additives (fly ash, blastfurnace slag) is responsible. In some cases the natural radioactivity of clay used in the cement production was higher than the world average.
