Radon Exhalation from Samples of Concrete with Different Porosities and Fly Ash Additives
Among many factors porosity and physical structure of concrete are assumed to be of importance for the radon exhalation from concrete. The radon exhalation from concrete has been studied as function of the water/cement ratio in the cement paste and of the curing conditions. The exhalation properties of concrete, where a part of the cement has been substituted by fly ash from coal fired power plants, has also been studied. The exhalation rate of the concrete samples has been determined by enclosing a sample in a container and following the growth of radon activity in the container as a function of time. No significant change in the radon exhalation has been observed for different W/C ratios and curing conditions as well as for concrete with fly ash. The free mass exhalation rate for ordinary Danish concrete has been found to be about 17 mBq.kg.-1h-1 per Bq.kg-1. The exhalation rate per unit radium-226 activity concentration has been found to be about 0.5 mBq.kg-1.h-1 per Bq.kg-1.
