Radon and Radon Daughter Concentrations in Swedish Homes

G.A. Swedgemark and L. Mjönes

This report presents the results of a nationwide study conducted to obtain an overall picture of radon concentrations in dwellings in Sweden and the results of measurements made by the local authorities to determine whether the levels are above the action level. The nationwide study was completed in 1982. Measurements were made in some 500 dwellings and were made with passive radon monitors. The distributions are approximately log-normal with 90% of the dwellings having radon concentration less than 200 Bq.m-3. The average radon concentration weighted for individuals has been found to be 105 Bq.m-3. The average for detached houses was 122 Bq.m-3 and for dwellings in multi-family houses 85 Bq.m-3. Assuming an F factor of 0.5, about 35,000 homes may have radon daughter concentrations higher than the action level of 400 Bq.m-3 EEC (0.11 WL). Local authorities have made measurements in some 32,000 homes. 3,348 homes had radon daughter concentrations above 400 Bq.m-3. 78 houses had values higher than 2,000 Bq.m-3.
