Fundamental Biological Processes in Radiation Tumorigenesis
The complex biological nature of multistage radiation tumorigenesis makes the biophysical interpretation of human epidemiological data on tumour induction a daunting task. In spite of this, recent advances in understanding of the molecular relationships between DNA damage repair, mutagenesis and tumour development suggest that this complexity can be resolved. These experimental advances are selectively summarised and their implications for radiological protection discussed with emphasis on the effects of low doses and the influence of genetic factors on tumour induction.
