A Thin-Layer Al2O3:C Beta TL Detector

M.S. Akselrod, S.W.S. McKeever, M. Moscovitch, D. Emfietzoglou, J.S. Durham and C.G. Soares

High sensitivity thermoluminescence beta dosemeters based on Al203:C have been developed and tested. The detectors were developed in two configurations: (1) a thin powder layer of Al2O3:C of surface density from 2 to 5 mg.cm-2 mounted without a binder on aluminium substrates; (2) thin single crystals of 20 mg.cm-2 on a Kapton substrate. The dosimetric characteristics of the dosemeters are presented. It is shown that by optimising the combination of the cover thickness, the thickness of the sensitive layer, and the substrate thickness, a nearly flat beta energy response can be achieved.
