Personnel Dosimetry for External Irradiation in Switzerland - Concepts and Methodology
The concept used in personnel dosimetry in Switzerland was elaborated in 1986 by a group of experts comprising representatives of both the radiation health authorities and the dosimetry services. Secondary limited quantities based on ICRU Report 39, Calibration and operational quantities were defined as well as precise calibration and evaluation procedures. These procedures differ from the international recommendations in several aspects, namely in the definition of the reference quantities for calibration and the requirement for directional response. Furthermore, minimal requirements were laid down for the major features of the dosimetry systems: sensitivity, linearity, accuracy, energy response and directional response. The performances of the accredited dosimetry systems were assessed by means of an extended test programme which revealed no need for major modifications. Intercomparisons are organised annually by the group of experts in order to check the fulfilment of the requirements and to maintain a high quality standard of personnel dosimetry.
