Qualification of Personal Dosimetry Services in Italy: Procedures and Results

About 80 services, processing over 2,000,000 dosemeters yearly, operate in Italy today. As no official guidelines on the performance of personal dosimetry services have been established in Italy, A Working Group (called ENEA-EDP, Personal Dosimetry Experts) has been established within the framework of the ENEA institutional task, to test, on a voluntary basis, the reliability of the services. The group published a paper on the test programme: it deals first with services' methods, facilities, instruments, staff, organisation and also with the irradiation test in the 0.1-50 mGy air-kerma range at different X and gamma ray energies. The test programme follows the international standards, with due attention to European Community recommendations. At year's end 1992, 52 services, gathering 56 different types of dosemeters, have been tested in nine sessions. The results of the tests and the evaluation methods of the services tested are discussed.
