CEC - Technical Recommendations for Monitoring the Exposure of Individuals to External Radiation

K.E. Schnuer (INVITED)

This paper presents an overview of the Community's tasks and activities in Radiation Protection, based on Chapter III of the EURATOM Treaty which states that the Commission is obliged to lay down basic safety standards for the radiological protection of workers and the general public. The Treaty also provides that the Commission will make recommendations, issue opinions and support directly by an extended programme of research activities in the radiation protection field. These actions of the Commission assist and support the efforts of the Member States in transposing Community law into national legislation and in the application of operational radiation protection. As a step towards this goal, in 1975 the Commission published the first Technical Recommendations for Monitoring the Exposure of Individuals to External Radiation. Since that date, the concepts and methods of individual monitoring have changed substantially. As a result the CEC has taken the advice of its Technical Experts Committee on Radiation Protection Dosimetry and decided to create a restricted working group to revise the document.
