Terrestrial Environmental Gamma Dose Monitoring Using the NE (Vinten) TL Dosemeter and Solaro Processor with Integral Software and Data Management

M.L. Ramsdale and J.M. Oduko

Measurement of terrestrial gamma background doses has been undertaken on behalf of Surrey County Council using thermoluminescence dosemeters at 26 sites on a 10 km grid across the County. The NE (Vinten) environmental dosemeter comprises a four-element calcium sulphate/dysprosium TLD card in a holder with metal and plastic filtration. The dosemeter satisfies the ISO (E(30) requirements for an environmental dosemeter. The dosemeter is read out using the Solaro TLD processor with on-line environmental monitoring software. The software has been improved following some difficulties with the original version. The dosemeter has been shown to perform satisfactorily and terrestrial gamma dose rate measurements made since April 1990 range from 0.044 to 0.078 Gy.h-1 with an overall mean of 0.061 µGyh-1.
