Intercomparisons of Current Measurements of Radon and its Progeny in Japan
Intercomparison measurements of radon and its progeny among participants in Japan have been carried out over four rounds from April 1987 to September 1991 at Kyoto University and Nagoya University. The number of participants in the active measurements were 10 groups (round 1), 14 groups (round 2), 18 groups (round 3) and 18 groups (round 4). For the passive measurements there were six methods used by four groups, nine methods used by six groups, 18 methods used by 12 groups and 18 methods used by 13 groups. The concentration levels of radon were set to 50-500 Bq.m-3 for rounds 1-3, and 10 Bq.m-3 for round 4. In the 222Rn intercomparisons of active measurements, the results were in good agreement with each other, and a large number of the participants' results were concentrated within the coefficient of variance of 10%. The coefficient of variance for the 222Rn progeny intercomparison was estimated to be 20% which was larger than the case of radon. For the passive measurements, the mean 222Rn exposures obtained with passive methods were in good agreement with the exposures expected from the active measurements.
