Investigation and Evaluation of the Radiation Exposure Situation in Uranium Mining Areas of Eastern Germany
Obvious environmental consequences of the uranium industry, public concern and the need for remedial actions in Eastern Germany after the recent political change requires systematic investigations and objective evaluations of the existing radiological situation. A comprehensive Federal project has been launched to study environmental contamination, radon concentrations in buildings and suspected health effects. First results indicate complex contributions of geological conditions and of old and new mining activities to public exposure. Decommissioning the still existing facilities of the now discontinued uranium mining is another aspect of radiation protection that demands a strict observance of the requirements. Criteria and levels needed to assess the situation and to define the goals for remedial measures are currently being defined. To accomplish the tasks related to radiation protection in the Eastern German mining areas, coordination by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection of the efforts, cooperation with regional and communal authorities and involvement of available technical and scientific expertise, will be necessary.
