Hand Dose Levels in Chilean Nuclear Medicine Laboratories

E. Stuardo

People handling radioisotopes in nuclear medicine activities risk chronic hand exposures. The development of these activities in Chile and the related workload has produced an increase in average hand dose levels. The control of nine laboratories with TLD ring dosemeters during the past eleven years shows that the highest yearly hand doses range between 30% to 42% of the 0.5 Sv limit. The maximum average yearly dose among technologist groups, is as high as 16% of the hand limit and 20% of the whole-body limit. Finger tip dose measurements are also tabulated and discussed.
