Freedom of Phantom Choice in Calibrating Individual Monitors - Consequences and Restrictions

S.R. Wagner

Based on the ICRU definitions of the dose equivalent quantities for individual monitoring, dosemeters worn on the trunk of the body should be calibrated on the ICRU sphere in terms of the appropriate directional dose equivalent, whereby the monitor's spectral and angular responses are also determined. The consequences of using phantoms of other shapes are discussed. For metrological consistency, corrections should be applied in the cases. Possible alternatives for the definition of the calibration quantity for individual monitors are considered, but the question remains whether a more complex calibration procedure is justified in view of the objective of a routine monitoring programme.
