Distribution of 137Cs in Human Organs
The Chernobyl reactor accident resulted, in the region of Salzburg in Austria, in high contamination with short- and long-lived fall-out products. To calculate individual doses resulting from 137Cs, the distribution of 137Cs in six human organs was investigated and compared with whole-body values, which were measured during the same time period. The results from the organ samples were evaluated with regard to organ type, age, sex and exposure time. Increasing 137Cs activities with the following organ types could be found: fat, thyroid gland, kidney, lung, liver and muscle. Using organ mass fractions and a dose conversion factor, a mean dose per person of 0.04 mSv could be calculated for the given time period.
