The 10% Rules and Remainder Organs in Internal Dosimetry

G.M. Kendall and B.W. Kennedy

This paper describes the 10% rules which the International Commission on Radiological Protection have put forward for use in internal dosimetry. These rules specify the organ doses to be neglected in calculating committed effective dose equivalent. The paper discusses the reasons behind the introduction of such rules and examines their effects. It is argued that while such rules achieve their main purpose, that of avoiding taking into account dose equivalents which are not significant, they have undesirable side effects. Alternative proposals are outlined.
