On The Use of CR-39 SSNTD as a Fast Neutron Personal Dosemeter
CR-39 proton sensitive solid state nuclear track detectors are considered to be the most promising personal neutron dosemeters for radiation protection purposes, at least for the near future. However, there are still some problems to be solved before general use in operational personal dosimetry is possible. We have tried to study at least some of these problems, such as: (i) the background in CR-39 materials available from different manufacturers and its suppression by chemical pretreatment; (ii) the linearity of response as a function of neutron fluence; and (iii) the energy dependence of CR-39 as a fast neutron personal dosemeter at different conditions of track etching. Studies were performed with six different CR-39 materials, the results are compared and analysed. The experience achieved during an operational test of such neutron personal dosemeters is also described.
