Angular Response Characteristic of a CR-39 Detector of Cylindrical Geometry

S.A.R. Al-Najjar and E. Piesch

Commercial CR-39 material produced by Pershore Moulding has been shaped in a half cylindrical geometry of 2 cm diameter using a special technique of softening and bending the CR-39 rectangular sheets. The neutron response of this curved detector has been investigated using 252Cf neutrons and different directions of radiation incidence. Data are presented for the scanning of the detector over an angular range between 0o to 180o along the shaped area. In principle, the angular distribution of track density can be used to indicate the direction of radiation incidence. By integrating the track density over this angular range the mean reading has been found to be practically independent of direction for radiation incident in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylindrical detector.
