Further Investigations on Neutron Energy Response of CR-39 Detectors
The energy response of CR-39 manufactured by American Acrylics and Pershore Moulding Ltd has been investigated using monoenergetic neutrons in the energy range between 144 keV up to 5 MeV and 14 MeV as well as 252Cf neutrons. Following the etching conditions recommended by Tommasino in 1984, we made use of a two-step electrochemical etching at 60 oC, applying in the first step a low frequency of 100 Hz and in the second step a high frequency of 2 kHz using a field strength between 22 and 30 kV.cm-1. In addition, lower temperatures and various etching times have been used and compared with the ECE technique after a pre-etching. In these investigations various radiator and absorber combinations of polyethylene, polycarbonate or polyethylene with aluminium foils have been used to improve the neutron energy response. The paper discusses the energy response of CR-39 detectors for different etching conditions and for different radiator absorber combinations.
