The Neutron Energy and Angular Response of Conventional Etching Systems Based on CR-39
The chemical etching of tracks in CR-39 is briefly presented giving the main characteristics: bulk etch rate, critical angle, etch rate ratio, etch induction time, deleting etching time, etc. All these parameters must be defined while simultaneously taking into account etching and observation conditions to define the limitations on use in neutron dosimetry. Various published experimental results are studied. The characteristics of the particles which must be detected due to a fast neutron irradiation are studied: the fluxes of these particles are mainly composed of protons from the radiator and of heavy recoils from the detector layer removed during etching. The limitations of track registration are applied to these particles to determine the number of tracks recorded by the CR-39 detector. This number is studied as a function of neutron energy and incidence. The decrease in sensitivity (tracks cm-2.Sv-1) of the dosemeter with the neutron energy and incidence is explained and compared with results taken from the literature.
